Why I don’t lend books: a discussion

Hiiii, it’s me, ya girl, here to talk about why I’m so evil that I won’t lend a book to anyone in the world ever ever ever (except for like two people), apparently, this is really rude, I should want to share my books so other people can experience them and read them, plus: I’ll get them back in the end, right?

My issue here is the principle, if I have given you something to borrow, respect it. Apparently some people don’t quite follow this mindset.

  • Lent books to a friend, gave them back in awful condition
  • Lent books to a few people who have never given them back
  • Lent books and the person I lent them to gave them to charity
  • Lent a book that someone annotated???

Don’t get me wrong, not all my books are in perfect condition, especially old ones from my childhood, but now, the majority of my books are in such good condition, I could sell them full-price as ‘new’ books and nobody would bat an eyelid. In my opinion, a book that has been taken so much care of that it is still perfect is a ‘loved’ book, a lot of people say a book with a broken spine and folded pages is ‘loved’ but, put it this way, if you chuck a baby around and damage it, it isn’t loved, if you look after it so that it is always lovely, it is loved, right? (might be a bit of an extreme comparison, but my books are my babies) also if you don’t mind the condition your books are in, sweet, I wish I wasn’t that bothered by it tbh

Nothing against you if you don’t mind your books not looking perfect, that’s all good, this is a matter of taste. BUT, if someone has lent you something, you take care of it, this is manners, so even if I gave someone something damaged to use, this doesn’t mean they can damage it more, catch my drift? But some people like to assume they don’t have to take care of something a) because it isn’t theirs and/or b) if it already has an imperfection, which is rude as hell

I love my books, and i take care of them and I’d like other people to do the same with them if i have trusted them with my things, but apparently, not many people think this

And so, that is why I don’t typically lend books to people, because whenever I do, I get them back damaged

  2. There are a *handfull* or people I will lens books to and if I borrow one I’m super she paranoid about how I care for it. Just today I’m bringing a new copy of a book to a friend because my puppy ATE IT. I’m a little terrified by this new hobby of hers. Obedience school?

  3. I do loan books but I really shouldn’t. I’m just too nice to say No and I really should learn such a simple word. I don’t really mind if my books are in perfect condition because I want to open my books all the way but I don’t want them to be in disgusting way either. I don’t have problems with anyone damaging my books… more like they don’t give them back?? That’s just so rude.

    1. I don’t mind if it’s me that’s damaged the book, I’m more offended if I’ve given someone my personal possession and they haven’t taken care of it or treated it with respect tbh

  4. I’m with you all the way on this one. I also have to have my books pristine and the very few people I lend books to know that. I have recently struck someone off my list after the book I lent them ended up in a charity shop, even though I’d made it clear I wanted it back.

  6. I’ll be glad to lend my books but most of my friends don’t read lol. I hate my sister for lending my books to her friends. Like, excuse me? Who gives you the permission to lend MY books and most of the books that she lent to her friends are not returned back.

  7. can relate. A friend of mine once borrowed a book, the day he was going to return said book it was destroyed beyond repair so i told him to keep it I also wished to tell him that I don’t want to see his face ever again but I didn’t 🙂

  9. Okay, that’s a super HORRIBLE experience. D: I used to lend my books around to any of my friends, but then after a while people stopped returning them to me. :/ I’m really picky with who I lend books to now. I don’t need my books to be in ~pristine~ condition when they’re returned, but I do hope that the borrower respects me and the book enough not to totally destroy it. D:

    1. Ugh I hate it when books aren’t returned, that’s pretty much stealing off of someone. I think I was pretty dramatic in this post but I just think if I have trusted someone and given them something, they should at the very least have the respect to take care of it as well as they can

  10. That sounds awful! I prefer not to share my books either. A person doesn’t have control of their things if they are lending them out, how they are going to be treated, or even returned for that matter.

It made want to laugh and cry all at the same time. 😂😭 I only have about 2 or 3 people I’m willing to share my books with, and even then I’m like..eh;lakdj 👀 Back in the height of Twilight days, I lent my copy to my brother-in-law, and he didn’t give it back until months and months later, and he still hadn’t read it. I actually think I just took it home one day when I was visiting without even asking if he was finished. 😂 And then I lent my sister Breaking Dawn and while she actually did read it, she had it for months and months, too. And the spine has never been the same since. It killed me.

  12. I don’t have a problem with my books being tatty – to me it shows they’ve been loved but I think if you borrow a book from someone, you should keep it in the same condition you were given it in. You wouldn’t ruin someones dress if you borrowed that?

    1. I think if I damaged the book, I don’t have a problem with it, you should see the state of my Harry Potter books, my main issue is if I’ve given someone else my personal property and they didn’t even try and respect my things tbh

  13. WHAT!? I can’t imagine lending a book to someone and getting it in worse condition than I gave it to them in. That stinks. My biggest problem is I feel like people take *forever* to finish a book, forget they have it, and then never give it back.

  14. I don’t really tend to lend books out for the same reason, I can’t cope with them coming back in a battered state – that’s if I ever get them back at all! Nowadays I just buy them the book for their birthday or Christmas, saves me the hassle haha!

  15. I’m pretty sure I have a phobia of touching books that other people have touched. My books are my books! When I used to lend them, they never came back so I completely agree with you.

  16. I love lending books to my friends, because most of the time they do return it and in good condition! I think it’s also about lending them to friends who are also huge book lovers that I know won’t treat any books horribly. Also I love borrowing books from other people; so I’d feel weird if I don’t lend them to the people who always lets me borrow books from them.

    1. One of my friends does so I’m fine lending them to her but I don’t expect other people to give me their books especially considering half the people I know have trouble sharing their crisps lol

  18. I’m not sure what is the worst to me – donating YOUR book to charity, or the one who annotated your book?
    I don’t lend my books to anyone, either. Apart from if they have a kindle, and the book is lendable through amazon. My paperbacks are MINE!

  21. I AGREE TO THIS IN A SPIRITUAL LEVEL. I actually don’t like to lend my books to others too. I’m kina paranoid and I don’t really feel safe if my books aren’t with me. They’re a part of my soul (like hundreds of horcruxes) and I would be really really upset if something happens to them.
